I was a bit disappointed, however, to discover that cupcakes from both CoCo's and Dozen are too big to fit in these containers. The diameter of the cupcakes is too large. I thought perhaps gourmet cupcakes were a bit larger than average, but when I baked my own cupcakes at home (in a standard pan with standard wrappers) they had the same problem as well. The Cup-A-Cake containers are too big to hold minis -- the only thing I've been able to use them for are pupcakes from CoCo's, and unfortunately I just don't purchase enough pupcakes to warrant owning four Cup-A-Cake containers.
I wrote the Cup-A-Cake folks an e-mail explaining the problem and suggesting they increase the diameter of the containers, but I haven't heard back from them yet. I'm also in the market for a multi-cupcake carrier. So far I've found these four, and because I'm insane I actually tracked them all down and measured them:
Name | # of Cupcakes | Storage Height | Cup Depth |
The Ultimate 3-in-1 Cake Caddy from Wilton | 12 | 3.13" w/ cupcake tray, 3.88" w/out tray | 0.25" |
Cupcake Carrier by Starplast (I couldn't find info about it online, but Target sells them and from the outside it looks just like this Martha Stewart Entree carrier, except opaque, and it comes with a double sided cupcake/mini-cupcake tray.) | 13 | 2.5" | 0.25" |
Cupcake Carrier by Oneida | 24 | 2.63" on bottom, 2.75" on top | 1.13" on bottom, 0.75" on top |
Cupcake Courier | 36 | 3.2" | 1.1" |
For reference, standard cupcake pans are 1.13" deep, but cupcakes often rise higher than that when they bake. Whenever I make cupcakes I typically end up with between 24 and 30, so I think I'd like a carrier that can hold at least 2 dozen cupcakes. Also, I want to use it to hold professonal cupcakes which usually have fairly tall frosting/decorations so I'd like as much vertical height as possible. Melisser (of The Urban Housewife) has a Cupcake Courier and mentioned that it's hard to pull the cupcakes out of the cups without ruining the frosting. It seems like the Oneida carrier could have the same problem. Anyone have any thoughts or recommendations?
