Gluten Free

A couple of months ago I noticed a new storefront next to my local grocery store:

A gluten free bakery in Pittsburgh?!?  Awesome!  I didn't get a chance to investigate until a couple of weeks ago, when I popped inside to see if they sell cupcakes.  As soon as I opened the door an amazing aroma of freshly baked pastries assaulted me.  It smelled so good.  In addition to scrumptious looking brownies, turnovers, and fresh loaves of bread, Gluuteny carries the standard chocolate/vanilla combinations of cupcakes.  I snagged a chocolate chocolate and vanilla chocolate for the affordable price of $1.90 each.

As I was waiting for my cupcakes to be packed up another patron asked me if I was Indian.  When I replied that I was, he asked me how old I was when I'd been diagnosed.  Huh?   I asked if he was referring to Celiac Disease, and he said he was, that his wife was Indian and that their two year old son had it, and they were trying to figure out if he'd gotten it from his side of the family or hers.  I told him that I didn't have it and that as far as I knew nobody in my family had it.  He asked if I had a friend or relative who had it, and when I said I didn't, he asked "So what are you doing here?"

Uh.  I explained that I just like supporting alternative foods; that whenever I see vegan or gluten free options at stores and restaurants I always try them because I think food diversity is important, especially when it comes to healthy options.  Is this strange?  Am I the only one who eats vegan and gluten free stuff "for fun"?

Anyway, the cupcakes were scrumptious (if a bit too sweet), and I totally wouldn't have guessed they were gluten free if I hadn't known.  You can read my reviews of them on Gluuteny's profile page.
