Cupcakes in the Mail
A couple of months ago Tom and Kerry, the awesome owners of Cupcake Station, e-mailed me to ask if I'd like to try a dozen of their new flavors. I happily accepted their offer, but asked if they could postpone mailing me the cupcakes until Baron was in town visiting. And so last Friday I spent the day at home, eagerly awaiting the arrival of the mailman. My doorbell rang shortly after 3pm; I lept from my couch and ran to open the door where I discovered a rectangular box leaning against the screen door on its side. Uh oh. I picked up the box and noticed that it had "This Side Up" written on one of the flat sides in bright red marker. I guess the mailpeople don't pay attention to those sorts of things. Sigh.
I took the box to my dining table and carefully opened it up. As soon as I pulled out the plastic cupcake container I started laughing. It looked like someone had literally picked it up and shaken it as hard as they could. The lid was so smeared with frosting that I couldn't even see inside to the cupcakes.
Tom and Kerry had cleverly skewered the cupcakes with cocktail toothpicks through the plastic cups of the container, in an effort to hold them in place. Unfortunately this simply resulted in the top halves of the cupcake becoming severed from the bottom halves. The only two cupcakes that survived relatively unscathed were a pair that were covered with a thick layer of chocolate ganache.
I didn't let the messy appearance of the cupcakes faze me. I spent the next several evenings on the couch with the container on my lap, skewering bits of cake with a fork and dunking them in dollops of frosting. It was like my very own cupcake bar! Speaking of cupcake bars, Tom and Kerry mentioned that they'd just installed one at Cupcake Station. It's kind of like the custom ice cream bars (e.g. Coldstone Creamery and 21 Choices); they offer four types of cake, many different fillings, fifteen frostings, and over thirty toppings. Crazy!
Thanks again, Tom and Kerry. The cupcakes were delicious!
