Cross-Country Cupcake Crawl: Day 1

Glendale, CA & Burbank, CA
Miles Traveled: 16
States Entered: 1
Cupcakes Consumed: 6

The first segment of our cross-country cupcake crawl began with my arrival in Bubank, CA.  My flight was originally scheduled to land at 5pm, giving Baron and I two full hours to get to Dots Cupcakes in Pasadena.  Unfortunately, both of my Southwest flights were delayed and I arrived in California about an hour late.  Baron was waiting for me at baggage claim, where it took another 15 minutes before my bag appeared.  After we encountered a 10 minute line to get out of the parking garage I thought for sure we'd never make it in time.  Luckily, the traffic gods were smiling upon us as it only took us about 15 minutes to get to Pasadena from Burbank during rush hour on a Friday.  Crazy!

Dots Cupcakes
Pasadena, CA
We arrived at the super-cute Dots Cupcakes about 20 minutes before it closed.  Dots "modern minimalist" meets "trendy girl" decor is right at home in the heart of Pasadena.  The circular theming, pastel color scheme, clever display case and playful lighting fixtures give the cupcakery a fun, young atmosphere.  The store is on the small side -- there's just enough room for the display case, counter, and two barstools tucked into the front-window nook.  Two small two-person tables are nestled against the store on the sidewalk for eat-in patrons.

Many of the flavors were sold out so close to closing time, but we still managed to snag one of the last Vanilla/Chocolate cupcakes.  In addition to our baseline we also got an Apple Pie, Strawberry Shortcake, and German Chocolate.  The modern style in which the cupcakes were decorated matched the cuteness of the store itself.  The staff at Dots appeared quite busy, and while they weren't exactly brusque, they didn't seem to have any desire to be friendly either.  In general we found their cupcakes to be moist and rich but oversweet, though the cake in the Strawberry Shortcake was near perfection.  You can read detailed reviews of their cupcakes on their profile page.  I would definitely recommend Dots to people in northeastern LA looking for a tastier alternative to Yummy Cupcakes.

Yummy Cupcakes
Burbank, CA
Speaking of Yummy Cupcakes, some friends of mine who I met for dinner brought me the Sprite and the Neapolitan from the Yummy Cupcakes in Burbank.  Like my last experience with Yummy Cupcakes, I was left unimpressed.  The overly plentiful frosting was sickeningly sweet, drowning the moist but mediocre cakes.  You can read my reviews of these cupcakes on Yummy's  profile page.

That just about wraps up Day 1.  Next stop: San Diego!
